Breakdown Tactics
from month to month so you can have an idea on what type of fishing you will be
doing during your trip for that time of year. Fishing the Big "G" Grass Patterns ·
January, February, and March:
Crank baits,
Rattle type baits, Jerk baits, Spinner baits and Jigs. ·
April:
This is when
the spawn will start to kick into gear and is usually wide open by the middle of
the month and will go on into May and I have even seen fish still on the beds in
early June but no big ones. During this time it is best to slow down and fish
plastics, jigs and senko type baits. ·
May:
With most of the big fish coming off from the beds and getting in that
post spawn mood crank baits, rattle type baits and spinner baits are the key.
Around the middle of the month the shad will start to spawn and the spinner bait
is the hot ticket. This is usually the best in the morning but will work all
day. When the bite slows on the spinner bait it is best to start swimming a big
worm or throw senko type bait and a jig. Also if the shad are up and on the
surface the top water will be hot all day long. ·
June & July:
By now
the grass is really starting to top out and mat up and a jig is the key to the
big bites. Tubes, creature type baits are really good baits to but generally
will not produce the big bites like the jig does but you generally will catch
more in numbers. Also
if the shad are up and on the surface the top water will be hot all day long. Flip the 1 OZ. Grass Jig on the deep edges and "Hang On"· August, September, October: This is when the frog bite will start to kick into gear and by Mid August the frog bite is wide open and will continue until all of the grass blows away. While the frog bite is the hottest and most action packed we still will flip with tubes and creature type baits in the mix of things.
